As the name of our promotions is Elite Strongman this competition was the Elite show of strongman strength be at over 90kg or over. I will be doing more of this weight class soon, It was one of my fav competitions I have seen in a long time. Once again I would like to thank my crew(family) and wife for all there support and help, also like to thank the athletes for all the strength, blood and guts their all gave on the day.

Well now, the worst you can be is 12th in England. A good year so far considering your injury.

Yeah, it was a good comp, well run, some good lads and fast paced, which was appreciated by the spectators standing in the piss rain!

I'll try and give a brief overview of how things went down with the caveat that weights, placing and numbers may not be 100% accurate - just what I can remember!!

Seeing the lads competing was great, they all did really well. The competitors picked lots for the first event - the truck pull and drag. The lads were pulling a 4x4 (could have been a Toyota Hilux..). The pull presented no problems to any of the competitors (most actually had trouble getting the rope pulled through fast enough once they'd got the truck moving) but the drag was a bitch and this is where the majority of the competitors came unstuck. The problem is that after the pull, the truck was left sitting in a dip which made it very hard to get it moving. This, coupled with the fact that the ground was wet and gravelly, made it very hard going. Unfortunately, Dave E was up 3rd so he didn't get the benefit of seeing the other guys go first (to see what not to do) or the fact that the course got drier as time went on the rain held off. Dave pissed the pull but couldn't quit manage to get the truck out of the dip and moving. Dave J saw a few of the other guys try and fail and to my dismay met the same fate. He was using better technique, but the fact that he weighed in at a feeble 75kg didn't help. Richard was more fortunate - he drew the lucky straw and went 15th. By now the course had dried out a little and he knew what he needed to do technique wise; keep the bar high, to keep the power going through the feet, and take baby steps. He was one of only 4 other competitors (could be wrong on that!) that finished the course. Very impressive and great to see - Just what Richard needed to stop the negative vibes from setting in, eh Rich Wink.

The next event was one that the guys hadn't trained for (as they had expected to be doing the Viking press) - the 90kg safe press. I think Dave E managed about 5 reps. It was Dave J's weakest event and he didn't manage any reps, as he had expected. Richard is a good presser and managed about 12 reps (I think!). It looked like the guys in front of him train at the FX gym and had been using the apparatus. They set the bar a bit higher than Richard and used a different technique; getting very low under the bar, performing a mini press and then squatting out the lift where as Richard was using more of push press technique. The guys were super strong though and had the event nailed - I think the winner got about 21 reps!! Another good event for the fire pig though who was now in second.

Third event was the 90kg farmers and this was a good one for all of our boys The only issue was that the farmers were very short which necessitated the need to take baby steps. This was bad news for Rich as he's usually able to get into his stride. Rich and both Dave's did comparable times (in the low 20's). Rich was a bit pissed off as the winning times where in the 15 second plus domain – easily within his powers with his farmers.

Forth up was the 170kg axel deadlift. Performances of 5, 7 and 7 reps for Dave J, Dave E and Rich left them mid-pack in this event. I think Dave E was slightly perturbed with himself as his first and last reps were disallowed. I think that Rich would agree that more deadlifting is required in preparation for the final.

It was only the top ten that got through to the final event so unfortunately, Dave E and Dave J didn't get through to the stone lift. Richard was 6th at this point and had to call on the spirit of the fire pig to get him through. In my opinion it was one of the best performances of the day as Richard had to win the event in order to make it into the finals. He ended up joint first on the stones with the guy who eventually came second overall (this guy is super strong – messed up the first event (couldn’t do the drag) and still came second). Although the other bloke matched him, it was Richard that set the target at 14 reps in 60 seconds with the 90kg stone (it always easier to go for a number that's already been set). He was like a machine, didn't even stop to catch his breath, bostin' performance and enough to get him joint 3rd overall (well, 4th after the count back). On to the finals now mate!!

Here are the results of the under 90k Midlands:

1) Andy Okane 66pts
2) Ben Pierce 59pts
3) Jamie Allaby 58pts (on count back)
4) Richard Scott 58pts
5) Matt Rouse 55.5pts
6) Phil Learny 54pts
7) Erkan Sahin 45.5
Cool Jamie Webster 43pts
9) Lester Watson 37pts
10) Dave Oliver 35.5pts
11) Michael Francis 28pts
12) Mike Neil 26.5pts
12) Dave Elmer 26.5pts
14) Stuart Parker 24pts
15) Dave Johnson 22pts
16) Simon Stockton 21pts
17) Kirk Davis 7.5pts

Another brilliant show in the 90k division, with all the lads giving it their all (even in pretty much solid rain all day!) Highlights of the show was Ben Pierces frame press (22 reps! with 2nd being 15 and 3rd 12 respectively) and Jamie Allabys deadlift (15 reps with a 175kg fatbar!)

Overall a great consistant performance from Andy Okane ruled supreme, with training partner Ben Pierce in second.

Must give a quick mention to Matt Rouse who on the last event needed 13 reps on the stone to get a top 4 place, the guy gave it his all (and I mean truly bust a gut going for it!) but narrowly missed with just12 reps, this guy will be back next year no doubt!!

The top 4 will join the Northern and Southern qualifiers to go to the first ever Under 90kg Englands Strongest Man in July

Events and dates to follow shortly

Re: Under 90kg Englands Strongest Man 2009

Post  richard scott on Mon Jul 27, 2009 10:17 pm

Just thought I’d do a little write up on my performance in the England’s under 90kg.
1st Event Truck pull
I was craping myself everyone had put climbing shoes on and there I was with my running trainers. But stepped up and went for it, it felt really nice till right at the end I slipped and fell but looking at the video I didn't lose that much time. Came 2nd felt good.
2nd Event Squat 180kg axle 75 sec
Had a warm up in the back with 140kg felt hard, squats have been down recently. Got on the bar and got myself G'ed up took the bar and it felt nice 2 reps flu up then for the first time ever the bar rolled down my back. I tried to reset but couldn't, did 3 more reps then my shoulders cramped tried one more time to reset but it was game over. 5 reps last place dam.
3rd Event Log clean and press 12''
Starting weight was 100kg did that easy always in the bag, the next weight 110kg cleaned easy got the press nearly to head for a second thought I could sit it on my head Jon Pall Sigmarsson style but it was not to be, had a second go but it was game over again. One day I will get that 110kg log soon I hope. Last yet again I think.
4th event Medley 240kg farmer walk load into sled flip tyre then drag sled back to start
Farmers felt good no problem flipped the tyre then the sled was slow and steady. Not too bad on this 3rd or 4th not sure.
5th event Dead lift
180kg start on this did that easy then a jump up to 220kg did that ok. Then a 240kg never lifted 240kg before and still haven't, got it to my knees though which is a kind of pb for me. Last again HA still happy with 240kg to knees one day this will also be mine.
6th and final Event Stones 90kg 110kg 130kg 150kg onto different height barrels
loaded the first 3 relatively easy picked up the 4th got it just to knees then it slipped tried again got it sat on my knees just then it slips had one last pull but I was done day over. Do not know how I placed on this.
All in all 8th place, 1st class comp proud to be apart of well run hat goes off to Dave Meer and co. The winner Ben Pierce is one strong guy think he won 5 out of the 6 event absolutely amazing. Tried my best the only event I felt I could have done better on is the squat. Need to train even harder see how I do next year probably last. Thanks to my friends Jim, Mark and Dave E and my girlfriend Emma for coming along and cheering me on and Mr. Horne for the half-time chat on the phone after I was Mr. mardy about the squat HA.

To be fair, Rich, you were pretty unlucky on a couple of the events.

Obviously the squat was disappointing as you could have done a few more reps. I'm not sure what the other guys did (missed first event) but it might have been enough to bump you up the placings a bit. Same with the medley too - the guy in front of you was 1/2 a second faster and ironically 1/2 a point in front of you in the final standings!

I can understand why the guys were encouraging you (they want a good show after all) but I really wish I'd called out and put you off going for that 2nd attempt on the deadlift as it wasn't coming up for love nor money. When you said that you'd hurt your back I felt a bit guilty.. I'm not sure, but it could have difference between getting that last 150kg stone - you were pretty damn close. The good news is that event those that did get the 150 stone looked to be struggling - that says to me that you are not far behind on that event.

I also think you did really well. This is you first proper season and with some solid work on your deadlift and press this winter you should do really well next year. You should take advantage and get some training routines of Dave before he buggers off to Wales!

After the competition you said that you weren't going to lose again - I'm looking forward to next year and seeing you live up to that statement!!

Well done, mate.
