2009 Whey Power Challenge

Post  Steve Gardener on Mon Oct 12, 2009 4:10 pm

As per the last few the Whey Power Challenge is our informal gathering held annually the last weekend before Xmas. There are no prizes (although you do need to be a BHSA member if any grip lifts are records for them to be recognized) and no entry fees. All are welcome to join us for an in town at a local pub 3-course Xmas dinner (more later but as per - deposit may be required and if we get more than 20 (as usual) we usually ask for selections to be made ahead of time).

Date: December 19th
Time: 10am*
*start time is flexible and depends on lifts you wish to take part in. But we will be booking the tables at the pub for 2.30pm so we must end 2pm latest and it;'s a 10-20min walk into town.
Events: Usual 5 lift format consisting of
1) Overhead- 1 arm dumbbell is favoured this year with many trying a dumbbell snatch (most found 100lbs or so 'easy' so expect more). However, as per, with their being no prize if you wished to do a big one armed clean and press / jerk no one would hold that against you. You can compete with one or both arms. Biggest weight = most kudos.
2) Squat - assuming my oh so damned fragile back holds together I may even have a crack at this myself.
3) Bench Press - usual no silly shirts rule applies (only cos it's a lot of faffing around). I'll take my usual touch-n-go style but we can ref with a pause if you wish. Spotters will be fellow competitors and we have a choice of 'in the rack' or 'use our bench'. I'm hoping to get 200-kilos this time.
4) Deadlift - Assorted bars to choose from. My personal preference is for the 2-inch / axle and I'm hoping to get 217.5-kilos double overhanded and thus 2.5kg more than the current WR (again back allowing).
5) Grip - assuming my backs not shattered into tiny fragments and I'm not pulling what little hair I have out with last minute dinner questions (no you cannot pay me next Tuesday) it's the 2 hand pinch. My aim to to break the world record (115kg).

If you're up for it let me know. Dinner info and updates to follow nearer the time.

Sounds good, hoping to make it this time. Would expect to be bottom of the pile, but could try for a few prs.

Am I right in thinking the 25kg blob you had was Savage's legacy?
If I do come, and if I'm in the car, I could bring the HGT25 along to have a pop at.

Yes it was. So we're back to the 20kg one which is Nick's. Any ad-hoc lifting is not to impinge on the actual (even though we're kinda casual) event itself. But there's still plenty o' ad hoc.

You don't have to do all the lifts or indeed any. You could watch and then eat. It's very easy like that. The only structure is time restrictions and order of lifts with no faffing about getting in the way of the main stuff.

To be honest Steve, if I'm driving 125 miles I'm competing, and at this stage there's no chance of that. My shoulders giving me hell as I type because I dared to squeeze my #2.5!

I figured this was being held in Gloucester and thought I would wiki it to see how far south it was (Geography was never my best subject!)
and now I am too scared to come as it is above the national average on all the crime! Razz

Statistics
Crime rates in Gloucester (per 1000 population) 2005-2006 [7] Offence Locally Nationally
Robbery 2.81 1.85
Theft of a motor vehicle 4.60 4.04
Theft from a motor vehicle 11.11 9.59
Sexual offences 2.04 1.17
Violence against a person 29.23 19.97
Burglary 6.84 5.67

In 2007/08, Gloucester had the 2nd highest crime rate for key offences among the 45 South West districts and unitaries.

Ha. When I said there's no entry fee I meant we'll rob you at the gate.

Was a bit gutted to have missed last year's do, so this looks like a great deal of fun.

The train journey from Swindon contains genuinely stunning sections as the track rolls through the valleys and hills.

LOL. They will appreciate the textures of Asda's sign... the local smells and colours of Barton Street... the low, low price of our ladies of the night come the evening ha ha

More actual info
Just back from pub. The 19th is ok as is the approx time. Meal will be £23.00 (menu info to follow later... I'm off for much needed Osteo work) and I MUST have deposits (£5.00 a head by the 1st of December (I'd prefer before!!).
