2009 Dominance
Derek Poundstone got 2 x seconds and one win in the major 3 comps last year. Could he go and do the triple this year?
Last year:
Arnold Strongman Classic
2008 - 1. Zydrunas Savickas (Lit) - 2. Derek Poundstone (USA) - 3. Mikhail Koklyaev (Rus)
Fortissimus
2008 - 1. Derek Poundstone (USA) - 2. Zydrunas Savickas (Lit) - 3. Sebastian Wenta (Pol)
World's Strongest Man
2008 - 1. Mariusz Pudzianowski (Pol) - 2. Derek Poundstone (USA) - 3. Dave Ostlund (USA)
This training shows that he's taking the first one serious, and possibly will.
Derek Poundstone 200 lb Circus Dumbbell Clean and Press for 15 reps
Derek Poundstone 1,050lb Frame carry for 20 feet

Re: 2009 Dominance
Care to put some money on this?
IMHO I don't think he will get all 3 1st places.
In fact..let's not make it money...we could make the bet 100 pressups or something horribly endurance-ey
as the task for the loser?

Re: 2009 Dominance
James,
Yeah I'll go for the bet.
But 100 is for pussies, make it a 1,000 reps on the Bench Press. I can't Press Up anymore because of my elbow, it's wierd it just doesn't like it.

You hit the '0' button too many times right?
I am guessing you mean with just a 20kg bar?
Fair enough. I accept.

How is the elbow recovery progressing?

Re: 2009 Dominance
I think it's recovered as much as it will. It's a lot better than it was pre-surgery, but I have an area that is 'dead' (they cut some nerves), and an area that hurts if I do certain things (which I try to stay clear of). But on the whole it's all pretty good.

From marunde-muscle. (http://www.marunde-muscle.com/forum/showthread.php?t=15743&page=15)
A user called Kevin cronin has been posting updates throught out the day. This is all his good work,
opinions, scoring etc. I have been unable to find anything official for day1 so far but looks like the big Z is in form.
1st event
Fortissimus has been great so far. started with the rolling thunder and an athlete meet and greet last night, seemed like a good number of people showed up.
Power stairs was first, Shaw vs oundstone was first matchup. shaw faster than derek outta the gates, derek just kept up the pace tho. Poundstone 52.28, shaw 58.98
»Andrus vs Derek vs Derek Boyer next, Andrus just finished inside the 75 sec limit, 73,6, boyer got the 3rd implement to the first stair, 11 total stairs
Felix vs Kazelniks, neither finished, kazelnicks took a nasty spill at the end, felix just missed finishing, 145 stairs, kazelnicks 11
Misha vs Zydrunas next, FANTASTIC matchup, zydrunas just blew through this, 42.47 sec, incredible, Misha finished in 50.58 sec for 2nd place, said he was pissed because it was the first time z had beaten him on power stairs
LPJ vs »»Savoie got the loudest crowd reaction of the event, savoie finishing in 42 sec, LPJ surprisingly not finishing, only 14 steps
Travis and phil faced off, travis winning »(57.1) and saying how great it was to beat an idol like phil (63.19) phil laid down and relaxed on the stairs for a minute afterwards
Jimmy and «Terry finished off, jimmy started off faster, but the height played a factor here, with him only able to finish 11 stairs, »Terry edging him out with 12
Ties on the stairs were broken by split time. after first event order was
Zydrunas
Misha
Poundstone
Travis
Shaw
Savoie
Phil
Andrus
LPJ
Felix
»Terry
JImmy
Kazelnicks
Boyer
2nd event
Some very fast times on the yoke along with some very gutsy performances just to finish
Boyer vs Kazelnicks - Boyer redeeming himself posting a time that would stand as first through quite a few competitors, 22.5 vs Kazelnicks 23.25
Marku clearly had problems, either with the yoke, or his flexibility, a very awkward set up on the yoke (one hand above the crossbar, one below) leading to the only non-finish of the event 16.85m. »Terry practically sprinted with the yoke here, 19.41
LPJ vs Felix, LP had a great run but finished just outside the top guys to go 25.59. LPJ cam back and started cheering on Mark, who had his first putdown at abnout the halfway mark. Displaying not an ounce of quit in him, Felix finished in 64.69 after a few more putdowns
Phil and Andrus in a footrace, »Andrus edging him out 23.57 to 25.97
Shaw and Savoie - I cant wait to watch brian on the yoke again, because he had one of the best starts i`v eever seen. Although »I`ve seen him compete at both worlds nad Mohegan now, neither had a yoke, so this was a great surprise, and im not sure if this was characteristic or just one of those days. 23.28 here. Savoie gutted this one out, putting his head down and just placing one foot in front of the other, finishing in 71,9
Travis and Poundstone up next. Derek FLEW with the yoke until an uncharacteristic stumble in the last 2-3 feet, costing him valuable time and causing him to wind up a quarter second behind »Terry, 19.66. Travis finishes 24.56
Zydrunas vs Misha. Misha with a few surprising putdowns, even semi-collapsing after one and taking a nasty crack on the head from the crossbar while re-setting himself. Zydrunas tho - unbelievable. Watching him compete is fantastic, he just picked up the yoke and went faster and faster and faster. I`m not even sure he was done accelerating when he reached the end of the course. 18 flat. incredible.
After yoke
zydrunas - 28
#stone - 24
Shaw - 19
Travis - 18
Misha - 17
Terry - 17
Andrus - 15
Phil - 13
Kazelniks - 12
LPJ - 12
Boyer - 12
Savoie - 11
Felix - 8
Jimmy - 4
3rd event
Sigmarsson Deadlift
Marku must`ve just been waiting for this one - 9 reps here
Savoie 2
Felix like a machine - 13
Misha - 5 - baffling really. Misha looked at his straps like they might`ve had somethign wrong with them, but after being the only man at the arnold »(i believe) to pull over a grand - not to mention JUST missing a 910 deadlift from the floor in a sanctioned pl contest - i thought he`d do well on a partial deadlift
Phil - just doing what he needed to do, picking up 3
LPJ - 3
Travis 7
Shaw 6 - for a guy with such a long way to pull he made the first few look INCREDIBLY easy. very surprised that he ran outta gas so quickly, not sure whether this was conditioning or strength, but it could be costly that he let »»Travis pick up a point on him here
Kazelnicks 3
Boyer - very very savvy planning here. Boyer pulled his fourth - after holding it for what seemed ages, not sure what the judges were looking for here - confirmed it was 4 and let the crowd know he was happy. couldnt manage another rep, but Boyer knew exactly what he had to do to break what would`ve been a 4 way tie between him kazelnicks, phil and LPJ
#stone with 10 - not sure how derek feels about it but i was happy for him, i wasnt looking like he`d beat felix after the first few, so having the second-most reps at thsi point must`ve been pretty satisfying
Terry - 6
Zydrunas - did just enough to beat derek (11) and stopped
After the sigmarsson wheels
zydrunas - 41
lbstone - 36
Travis - 28
Shaw - 27.5
»Terry - 25.5
Misha - 24
Felix - 22
Boyer - 18
Phil - 17
Kazelnicks - 16
LPJ - 16
Marku - 15
Andrus - 15 (didnt come out for the dl, dunno why exactly)
Christian - 13
4th event
Ironmind overhead medley
shocking how many guys had trouble with the first implement. a real shame that it was the 4th event, as teh fatigue (COmbined, of course, with the incredibly heavy weights) made this event into a race through the first two implements (346.5 log and 366 fixed axle)
Andrus - after passing on the deadlift andrus had to go first here. split cleaned the axle, just awesome 2 in 21.88
Savoie - 0 looked very uncomfortable after cleaning the log
LPJ - 2 in 32.77 a little slow on the first, but got it
Kazelnicks - real flexibility problems on the axle continental. had to switch to a keshishian halfway up, wond up missing it. 1 implement 5.7 sec
Phil - really gave the third log a run for the money. incredible technique on the axle, it was a continental, but it never stopped moving ont he way to the rack position 2 in 36.94
Boyer 0
Misha - split jerked the log actually continentaled (!) the axle and came oh-so-close to pressing the 375 kazmaier log
Terry 0
Shaw - 2 in 22.16 with his sweet nike romeleos (sp?)
Travis - 2 in 21.43
Marku - scary moment when marku dumped the log after his first press attemtp it his one of the pieces of timber that it had been resting on and sling-shotted it into the crowd behind him. 1 in 27.09
Derek - did fine witht he first log, but uncharacteristically slow on the axle dropping him into 5th for the event. rested before the third log, and also sooooo close, but no go
Zydrunas - obviously fast through the first log. practically muscle snatched the axle. by far, hands down LOUD»ES»T crowd reaction of the night when he pressed the 375 kazmaier log. went for the next axle (388?) but missed it and called it there. if he needed it, i think he woulda had it
Felix - 0
After the ironmind overhead medley
zydrunas - 55 - are you freaking kidding me?
poundstone - 46
Travis - 41
SHaw - 38.5
Misha - 33
Andrus - 27 fantastic to be here after passing on an event
»Terry - 25.5
LPJ - 24
Phil - 24
Felix - 22
Kazelnicks - 22
Marku - 20
Boyer - 18
Savoie 13
Stones - lots of athletes had a problem with the tacky becuase of how hot and humid it`s been
Jimmy passed on this event
Savoie went first but these stupid barrels have no balance, so he knocked one over. had to be so incredibly frustrating for him. fortunately they gave him a re-run at the end he wound up with 4 in 44.96
Boyer 2 in 43.52
Felix 4 in 29,96 - a great run, but would be eclipsed by a few
Terry 5 in 51.43
Kazelnicks 4-26.65
Phil - 5 in 29.59 jsut a great run. had a real shot at the 6th stone
LPJ 5 in 59.62 started off great, but just missed terry`s time. Terry was watching closely, coming over to check out the stop watch i had on the event, haha
Misha 5 in 44.81 - so deliberate and methodical, makes each one look easy, i really thoguht he would have the last stone, but jsut couldnt get it quite high enough
Poundstone - 5 in 32.8. kristin told me she had him apply the tack in front of the fan and stay cool til it was his turn to go. i think it helped, again, another near miss on the 6th stone
«Shaw 6 in 54.78 - really, is anyone surprised after his run at mohegan? no clock probnlems here
andrus - 5 in 43.78
Travis - 5 in 46.66. just shocking. Travis was FURIOUS. beyond furious. some real problems with his tacky on both the 5th and obviously 6th stones
Zydrunas`tacky was literally dripping just before the start of his run. couldnt load the 6th stone giving brian the win. shockingly slow through the first 5 fropping zydrunas to 6th place here
Not sure how the scoring works, i believe they combine your results here with the natural stone run tomorrow and then that counts as one event? not sure, so didnt bother to figure teh overall

Re: 2009 Dominance
Eeeeh!
Nice news, this comes after the mother of all A/W training sessions yesterday!
Right I'll do this after my supermatch July 11/12th.
I'll do 1,000 reps with a 45k disc. This hopefully will be possible, and I'll get it timed.

It's no drama.
Just do something crazy next time you find yourself with spare time and energy.
Then tell us all about it
