UK disks - Rarity poll

Post  Tom on Wed Nov 04, 2009 12:29 am

Hi David

I prepared these to ask you in an email but decided to post here as it chimed so well with the previous post:

Is it true to think that a rounded edge disk will most usually be pre-war or just after
What's the 'rarest' UK disc to find, besides an Inch?
And do you know what an Inch disc would look like anyway? Is there a pic anywhere in your collection?
How 'rare' are the C.W.L.C. discs? Picked up some more the other day, also any news on those R.E.W. discs? I have 4 I've found now...

And lastly, if you were to compile your own 'rarity' poll of UK disks, what would you say are the top 5 or 6 makers which are currently hardest 'to find' (if they can be found)? I guess rarity doesn't necessarily mean older...

Thanks mate

Tom

Tom,
Great questions; I'll answer them in the order, with your question.

Q. Is it true to think that a rounded edge disk will most usually be pre-war or just after?
A. There are roun-edged discs either side of ww2 - Body Sculpture is a name that comes to mind.

Q. What's the 'rarest' UK disc to find, besides an Inch? And do you know what an Inch disc would look like anyway? Is there a pic anywhere in your collection?
A. There are some companies who sold small amounts of discs, and of course these can be very rare to find, but may not be as desirable as a more well known company. An Inch disc is a crudelly cast flat edged disc that you can see Arthur Saxon using on his Bent Press in his books and probably online. The other company at the time 'Cyclops Foundry Co.' also produced discs just after Inch produced them, and no doubt looked very similar. At that time weights didn't have the manufacturing name cast onto them. These discs were the jump from Globe to discs.

Q. How 'rare' are the C.W.L.C. discs? Picked up some more the other day?
A. You can find them every so often, but they are rare, and a great set to have as they were made by the famous W.A. Pullum. The 50lb disc in this set (brought out later) is very rare, and the "Patent" and "Cambered" bars are extremely rare.

Q. Also any news on those R.E.W. discs? I have 4 I've found now...
A. Nothing on them at all, so far.

Q. And lastly, if you were to compile your own 'rarity' poll of UK disks, what would you say are the top 5 or 6 makers which are currently hardest 'to find' (if they can be found)? I guess rarity doesn't necessarily mean older...
A. As I said earlier, rarity can be in the beholders eye, and certain discs from some makers can be tougher to find than the rest of the set.

But MY Top 6 manufacturers would be:
BAWLA Olympic discs in kilos.
Thomas Inch Challenge Dumbells and weights
W.A. Pullum (CWLC) "Patent" barbell set.
Chas Trevor weights and Kettlebells.
Viking Barbell Olympic discs in kilos.
Ronald Walker Olympic weights set.
