New book on the History of Weights, Barbells, Dumbells, in the UK

Post  David Horne on Tue Mar 03, 2009 5:15 pm

I'm in the middle of writing a new book on the History of Weights, Barbells, Dumbells, in the UK. I've been researching and writing a few books lately, but this one has come to the fore as others have ground to a halt Rolling Eyes

I have spent a long time looking through my huge collection of magazines and will continue to exhaust all resourses I have here, but I am sure that I will miss something. If anybody has any old discs or weights (standard or Olympic) that they think are unusual or even just old, I would be grateful for a photograph or any information available to add to my research.

Before you go to the trouble of taking a photo, contact me first with any details of what you have to ask if it's worth doing.

Many thanks,
David

Sounds like a good read. You know, when you look back to when you were a youngster and see all the missed opportunities to acrue things specific to our current hobbies/interests it almost makes you weep Very Happy

I love history.
The change over from Globe to disc-loaded barbells/dumbells has been an interesting read so far.

I think I'm about halfway through the books and magazines I need to look through. Hopefully I can start to put it together as a book in about 3 months time.

How do you find the time when you have a young family Shocked

My day goes roughly like like.

- Awake to a knee in the nuts as my 2 year old gets in to bed
- click and creak my way to the toilet, dragging behind me the small child that has attached itself to my leg.
- Work out what part of me is sore today as I go down the stairs for breakfast.
- Eat and then check the weather forecast. what a suprise, it is blindingly hot again!
- Upstairs to brush the teeth.
- Pick some unironed clothes off the floor..sniff them(!)..get dressed for work
- At my desk for 7:30.
- Flogged to death by ungrateful employer until 4pm
- Home...train in backyard..under watchful eye of 2 year old self appointed coach.
- Dinner, dishes, general housework.
- Put the wee one to bed
- Collapse. Try and hold a conversation with wife.
- Got to bed for sleep. Remember to get up several times overnight for a pee.

I'm older but as yet the 'get up through the night for a pee' thing has, as yet, not been an issue.

James,
Writing the book is classified as work - I work for myself.

Still got our 2 year old in our (big bed) most of the night.

Dinner, dishes, general housework.

Elizabeth sorts that out.

We train 6 days a week, but this is done when we have a break from work, pretty easy really.

Weeing in the night, not usually.

Sorry for turning your thread in to a discussion on male prostate! Not sure how that came about.

Have your decided if this book will be printed or will be be an e-book?

James,
She does have a sister, and she's taken as well. Anyway, I thought there was lots of aussie girls who liked the kitchen duties! Twisted Evil

I'm not sure about the book yet. At first I was just going to do an e-book, but the people who want to buy it asked for me to print it off. Must admit I love books, the computer screen is not the same, plus I do most of my reading in other rooms where there is no computer.

So I may offer a printed off, comb-bound version, like the other books of mine 'Thomas Topham', 'Physical Culture Bibliography', etc.

Good news, David.

I prefer the paper version of the book, too.

All the research is done, a couple of thousand magazine, books etc have been looked through. I now have 36 pages of reference to go through, bring out the relevant mags/etc and then write it.

We're on the home straight!

Mark,
It has taken some time, but boy it's been great reading through the mags and books again, and you get sidetracked with all sorts of stuff.

I'm onto C now, as the book is alphabetical, and it all looks great so far.
