Dinnie Stones

Post  David Horne on Mon Jan 05, 2009 2:19 pm

We are lucky to have on board here Gordon Dinnie, who runs the excellent website on Donald Dinnie, the stones, and the successful lifts. In fact it was Gordon and David Webster who refereed mine and Nick's lifts in 1998.

Maybe I missed it somewhere, but all I could find are double lifts. stone A in one hand, stone B in the other.
Is this the way they should be lifted?
Then I really need to buy some extra plates to train for it Wink

Mark,
For the actual Dinnie Stones - yes. After all these years the list is still quite small as you can see, it is still a very good feat of strength!
Even Steve Jeck in his stone lifting book couldn't lift just the heavy stone on its own. These stones can stop most folks!

We do have a Dinnie lift with just one weight (187k, or 146k stone and handle) for reps in the BHSA record list. This is a fun lift!

Well, it will take some (read: a lot) of training to be able to lift both at once, but I've ordered the rings so I might as well go for it then.
I always wanted to go to Scotland one day, so this could be a nice excuse Wink

At my Gripmas Carol contest - I set up my Dinnie trainers after the contest. Four of us (including me) did 687# - then 3 of us missed the 734# actual weight - floating the larger weight but not clearing it. The only one to pull them was Stew Rosendaul at a bodyweight of 183# or so. Hopefully I can get them on the day I visit - I think at age 60 or 61 this summer - I would be the oldest to do so. My grip isn't a problem - I simply need more overall strength.

Grip can be a problem to some. Overall strength can be a problem too others, and some folk don't have enough of either.

Also core strength can be a problem, as there is 90lb difference between the stones. So plenty of heavy One Hand Side Bends are needed.

I honestly have no idea what to expect with it.
Before I started regular strength training again, I noticed that my core didn't really like one hand lifts with 200kg, but now my core has gotten much stronger (heavy squats, overhead work and deadlifts without a belt), that I'm sure it's not a problem anymore (haven't tried it though).
grip, I don't know. I would say no, but can't really be sure until I have the rings and can feel how it feels.

Man, the more I think about it, the harder it is to wait to give it a try!!! Very Happy

Scotland's greatest weightlifting set.

Post  Laine Snook on Mon Jan 05, 2009 10:07 pm

Hello All,

I recently had some dealings with the Dinnie Stones, believe me, they fell out of the big tree and hit every branch on the way down!

As David said, they have stopped many a strong man in his tracks - and they will do so long after you and I have departed this planet. That's the whole point.

Go to Scotland - grab the same handles as Jon Pall and Kaz, and other men who had the Kahunaburgers to test themselves against Scotland's greatest weightlifting set. Pull, and pull, and them pull some more - they might just let you lift them - you'll never know until you try.

Scotland has some great Stones - the Inver Stone for example - lift them, and you become a very small part of their long History - but believe me, they will become a very large part of yours.

I hope to return to Scotland this year, but I am only planning to go for a short walk.

Train hard,

Laine

My problem is my girp was giving out. I have enough horse power to lift them I just need to direct it better. When I watched the video I was pulling to the side and not strait up. I think if I fix that I can get the weight.
