Re: Dinnie Stones
I've recently been asked quite a few questions on training for this feat, so here are a few pointers. (6 Aug 08)
1. It is hard to lift them if it’s right at your strength limit, so get strong! Remember there are no warm ups, the first lift is THE weight.
2. If you are not tall then lift with your feet closer together, so that when you lift you will get some extra clearance on the stones, as the stones (especially the big one tilts when it comes up).
3. Wear good strong boots with a hard sole and heel.
4. Wear some knee wraps (like rehbands), this will keep the area tight.
5. I’d wear tracksuit bottoms instead of jeans, it will just be more comfortable, and you can wear the lifting belt properly.
6. In training play around with trying the big stone at the front and at the back – see which feels the best. I’ve lifted the stones in both styles, and found that each style stresses the body slightly different. Train on some very heavy side bends.
7. Remember that the stones are in Scotland and it rains a lot, in fact in both my visits it rained both times I was lifting. So get used to training with the rings outside in the cold and wet.
8. Using the replicas will aid you so much.

David,
Do you think it is a waste of power to "warm up" with a two hand lift on the "small" ring/stone and one 2hand lift on/with the big ring/stone?

Re: Dinnie Stones
Thorsten,
Firstly you have to do what YOU want to. But for me, I want to focus all my energy on the task at hand, and I felt that a warm up with one stone would be no use. In fact it could be detrimental, as you will lift that differently than both stones, and also with your mind and aggression not fully ready, one stone may feel heavy mentally and put you at a disadvantage.
Warm ups without the full metal psyche can sometimes feel heavy. Dave Ostlund mentioned this once, and hence he doesn't do much practice with the stuff the day before.

Re: Dinnie Stones
David,
a specific program to lift the Dinnie Stones with the replicas, for how many weeks would you train for this feat? do you think that 6-8 weeks could be enough?
Thanks,
Jose.

Jose,
Yes if you are strong and tough enough to start with. I would just do singles in that period of time.

Re: Dinnie Stones
those Dinnie stones are definitely something I'd like to try some day. They come to my mind every now and then. Plus it would be a nice excuse to travel to beautiful Scotland again...

Re: Dinnie Stones
I can get the correct weight on mine, just depends on the thickness of your big discs. Or you can do as Al has done in the pic.
We'll send your Dinnies early next week after the strike.
