Barbell Curls

Post  danielemerson on Wed Sep 02, 2009 9:32 am

Hi, haven't posted in a long time, been very busy, even got married.
Anyway I have been taking my training a lot more seriously lately and I am sticking to a simple routine and not over doing it like i always used to.

Currently doing;
Deadlift
Side Press
Turkish Get-Up
Barbell Curls
Some Grip work once a week
Hill Sprinting once a week

Just getting some bad wrist pain and soreness below the elbow when doing curls, have changed from the 7ft bar to a curl bar and the pain persists. I need a solution as I am working up to a goal (never been interested in curls before so now I want to see how strong I can get in this movement).
When doing curls I do 1 to 2 reps of just below my max. I pay special attention not to tire myself at all. I keep tight and breath properly and stop when it doesn't feel right.
What can i do??

thanks for any help.

Try DB hammer curls, ideally fat ones.

I don't know if my statement is true but I think that not everyone is designed to do barbell curls. They always gave me trouble at the elbow at some point when training them and I've had that pain even when doing them super strict.

I think the advice of doing hammer curls is spot on. Maybe someone like David might be able to advise you on strengthening the elbow. Maybe people like us have some kind of weakness that gets exploited when curling that some simple strengthening exercise can help with.

As for bicep strength and size I found it interesting to know that John Grimek was quoted as saying that the barbell row was the best exercise he ever did for building bicep strength and size. That's going to be my approach from here on, compound movements. Any isolation exercises will be for rehab and joint health.

As above - DBs are more forgiving Daniel, its a more natural movement & less pressure on your wrist. Either DB curls or DB hammers.

Hi thanks for replies.
Problem is that i dont have heavy dumbells and now is not a good time to invest in any.
Going to give myself some more time to heal then i will try again with the curl bar and see if it was only the barbell that was causing the pain. If it is still sore then I'll try the rows.

Assuming you've got the weight plates already, you can get a loadable dumbell handle from a sports shop for a few quid.

aha, forgot about that, thanks.
Perhaps dumbell curls will be better, apparently the rotating of the palm causes increased bicep activity.
Also I have noticed that I can Barbell Curl way more than double what I can 1 arm curl, perhaps getting both arms passed my current total weight will lead to a bigger barbell curl.

Just checking but is a 90kg curl at 76kg something to be proud of? Not at that yet but that's a goal, if i can make it that far might keep going.

I think you can pick up cheap spinlock DB bars in a big Tesco pretty cheap, about £8 each? I got one of those York 20kg sets about a year ago for £16 just to do some RC work at home, they're £30-£40 now.

Spinlock handles are cheap, but they are annoying as they start coming undone & you cant fit many plates on them. So if you can spend a bit more money:

These look like a good deal from Watson:

Or if you've only got Olympic plates, these 2" handles look good:

I have the Watson's thick ones and they are nice.
I also have a cheap standard spinlock one like Richard describes, think I got it on offer for something daft like £5 in a sports shop. Fits plenty of weight on for curls.

thanks for the links and replies. Sorry for late response, been super busy.
I have 30kg in standard plates (4xt.5kg) but have much more variety and weight in olympic plates so i'll get those handles. However for the mean time i am going to mix my 7.5kg's with an old dumbell set i picked up in a charity shop (It looks really cool but only has 12kg in plates). Bringing the standard plates tonight to see if they fit. If so I could work my way up to 38kg without having to get the new handle.
