Wood vs Cannon Rolling Thunder Challenge

Post  Paul Wood on Mon Jun 15, 2009 2:00 pm

This is a transatlantic challenge between myself and Matt 'boom boom' Cannon Very Happy
Neither of us are great rolling thunderers, so this will help motivate us to change that.
Like the other challenges, we'll keep records for max single and reps, but it will be a race to a 75kg single.

Current prs:
Me 65kg single, 55kgx12, 50kgx23
Matt: 62.5kg single, 56.8kgx10, 52.2kgx20

So I'd say we're fairly evenly matched to start.

"boom boom" heh, clever Wink

I have not tried a max pull in a number of weeks so I hope to have an update pretty soon.

I was telling Paul, I just hit a brick-friggin-wall on the Rolling Thunder. Even a 1kg increase for me can mean the difference between reps and a missed lift.

clown
I know what you mean, I think wrist strength may be a big part of it, below a certain weight you can lock yourself into a good position, add just a little more and it will start to peel your hand open.

Today's Rolling Thunder: 8x25, 3x45, 5x1x60*, 7R9Lx50
*A couple were only halfway up, a couple were very solid. Was doing them between sets of squats and seemed to depend on palm sweatiness, even with a bit of chalk, plus the wet weather maybe didn't help.

Quick workout.

* 41kg x5
* 52 x2
* 64 x1 (New PR!)
* 70 x0, 140 felt so good I shot for the moon.
* 66 x0, maybe if I had not tried 155
* 57 x15, tough but made it with the right.
* Pony thumbs x2

I got the PR by basically yanking the weight off the floor. In the past, I usually ease into the lift more. My issue is breaking the weight off the floor. I don't think I've ever lost it at the top.

Nice work Matt, looks like I could be in trouble pale
Maybe I should try that, I quite often lose them part way up.

Paul! When's your next workout? I've got pinch tonight and probably RT again this weekend.

Oops, didn't post my last one from last wednesday, not a great one:
Rolling Thunder: 8x25, 3x45, 1x60, 6x52.5, 12x45

Going again today but it's very hot and humid here and I'll be doing them after deadlifts. I'm getting my excuses in in advance Wink

No go today - was just going to rep out on 52.5, the first few reps felt easy but had to stop as my lower traps were killing me. I hurt my shoulder on Monday and think it's related. Feels like a muscular thing rather than the joint, so hopefully should heal up soon.

GL guys - hope to see some good increases in weight - I need to start one of these w/Rex - I think we're pretty close on the RT (un-injured)

Did RT after deadlifting today, felt slightly better, lower trap area is still giving me some gip though.

RT: 52.5kg x 11,8 RH, 8,8 LH
Strange, LH has been stronger lately.

Woody, ain't you left handed?

Good workout. I'm going again tomorrow night and I smell a PR Twisted Evil

Hey, do you start the lift with a cocked wrist?

Yep. LH always used to be stronger thumbless, RH was slightly stronger regular, but recently LH has been better both ways, maybe since I injured my right wrist at the end of last year.

Uh oh!

No I don't cock the wrist, mugs' game as mobster says, but I probably hold it so the back of my hand is almost straight down. Is that how you do it? If you were to let it truly hang neutral the hand swings back a bit more.
